Acne scars occur when spots do not heal properly . There are precautions one can take in both preventing and reducing acne scars. Your average whitehead is unlikely to leave a scar unless picked. Picked spots can increase the likelihood of scarring.

There are two main types of scarring – icepick scars that leave small holes on the skin and pigmented scars that leave a purplely-brown mark once the spot goes away.

Icepick scars can be treated with lasers or dermabrasion if they are not reduced by topical or over the counter methods.

Treatment for pigmented scars can be bought over the counter. Bleaching creams can reduce the appearance of mild scars but it will take at least 6 weeks to see any noticeable differences. If no difference has occurred, stronger creams can be prescribed (often alongside Retin A).

More severe scars can be helped by using chemical peels (which are also recommended for women with darker skin tones to reduce chances of hyperpigmentation that may occur with dermabrasion or lasers).

Reducing acne scars is possible and need not be something that haunts you for the rest of your life.

They say that the best treatment for acne scars is prevention (not picking or squeezing spots and looking after your skin) but that doesn’t help those people who are already scarred.

Luckily for them, there are several acne scar treatments available.

Dermabrasion helps shallow acne scars where machines with rotating diamond edge wheels are used like sandpaper to scrape away damaged skin so new skin can grow in its place.

Chemical peels involves placing a chemical layer over the skin, which when taken off takes a layer of skin away revealing a new fresh layer.

Punch replacement involves removing the deep scar and placing a skin graft over it.

Deeper acne scars can be helped by dermal fillers whereby collagen or fat is injected around the scar to level out the surface.

Subsicion is an acne scar treatment where scar tissue is broken up beneath the skin layer forming a blood clot, which helps the tissue connect beneath the scar and levels out the scar.

Laser treatment in a modern technique where the laser penetrates the skin and gets rid of damaged skin.

Always consult with your doctor before following any of these courses of action.

Some people say, and even research proves, that using antibacterial soap can in fact kill off normal bacteria and create a mutant bacteria that becomes resistant to any soap that you choose to use and even some antibiotics. If you these soaps all the time you can also run the risk of making the skin impervious to non harmful bacteria that actually helps maintain your skin’s health.

Nobody is saying that you should not use antibacterial soaps, but to use them all the time could be counter productive in the long run. Did you know that three quarters of liquid soaps and about a third of bar soaps have antibacterial products in them anyway? So normal soaps are just as likely to do the required job if you do not have a major problem with acne. If you have a major problem you should consult your doctor about potential medications you could try.

It is also probably best to let children use normal soaps because their skin is very sensitive and good at producing its own bacteria that helps skin maintenance.
